What’s the problem?

The main problem is that West Papua Refugees are the most neglected refugees in the world for some reasons:

1. The total number and whereabouts of all West Papuan refugees are not well documented by anyone, even by themselves. There is no clear information about how many refugees are there in (1) Papua New Guinea; (2) Australia; (3) Americas; (4) Other Melanesian countries; (5) Africa; (6) Europe.

There is no clear information about the status of all those West Papuans around the world.

2. West Papuan Refugees are not recognized as refugees in Papua New Guinea. We only hear some recognised as refugees in Australia, but nothing about those of us in Papua New Guinea and other parts of the world.

3. West Papuans ourselves never feel we are refugees, because we are still in our New Guinea Island, and live among our own peoples;

4. West Papuans do not know what are our rights and responsibilities as refugees in respective countries where we are, particularly in Papua New Guinea. Most West Papuans feel as if they are wrong or it is sin to live in Papua New Guinea, and therefore, it is normal punishment for sin to be not recognized, to be not treated according to human rights laws, norms, standards and principles.

5. PNG government in particular treated West Papuan refugees as a problem, hindering a good relations between nation-states, and therefore, it treats the issues as low profile, in order to avoid Indonesia’s reaction.

6. Indonesia, Australia and Papua New Guinea prefer not to air the issue of West Papuan refugees. They all want all West Papuans to return to West Papua, not to live in Papua New Guinea, a position that technically endanger the life of human beings.

7. Frustration, anger and disappointment nurtures home-sick, long feeling of wanting to go back home to enjoy normal human life makes many West Papuan refugees are mentally disoriented, unhealthy and sick.

Many youths and adults are unemployed, and they live until the end of the life with full of bitterness.

Nobody in this world is born here to face all these kinds of circumstances in life. However, this has become the matter of life story for all West Papuans, particularly those of us live in eastern part of our New Guinea Island, the Independent State of Papua New Guinea
